Coronavirus: Guam Status Update

https://www.billkochman.com/Blog/coronavirus-guam-status-update/

Dear friends, despite our remote location here in the Western Pacific Ocean, we have not completely escaped the negative effects of this ongoing global crisis. However, thankfully, due to our strict adherence to GovGuam-mandated stay-home orders, social distancing, wearing face masks, etc., the negative impact of the coronavirus has been greatly mitigated thus far, compared to many other places around the world. In fact, to date, under 1% of officially confirmed cases have resulted in death, and most of those people who have died, had underlying health conditions which contributed to their deaths. By God’s Grace, our low mortality rate will continue to be the case into the future. However, it is not all roses here, as you will see in a minute.

Coronavirus test results began to be publicly reported by our government and local news media on March 12, 2020. I can report the following statistics to you. As I said, compared to many other places in the world, we are doing quite well, but the numbers are still alarming for the small size of our island. It is for this reason that I am personally convinced that home quarantine, social distancing and wearing face masks have been effective tools in combating this virus:

As you can see, according to the statistics, we experienced only five deaths from March 22, 2020 to April 11, 2020. After that, we didn’t have a single death in over four months. Then, suddenly, in August of 2020, our numbers — both confirmed cases and the number of deaths — began to skyrocket at an alarming rate, making this period even worse than the first six months of infections here.

Furthermore, as has occurred in other places, initially, those people who have perished were all elderly individuals with pre-existing health conditions. But then notice what happened beginning in August: people in their 30s began to die, and even one 10-year-old boy died. Now we even have a few infants dying also, as well as fully vaccinated people. Please note that we do have a large elderly population here — of which I am one — so please keep us in your prayers. Thanks!

In addition to the infections in our local population, the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt — which was docked here until the third week of May 2020 — had at least 1,156 infected sailors as of May 5, 2020, and possibly more. One sailor died at the Naval Hospital on Guam while the vessel was docked here. Over 4,200 sailors were eventually evacuated from the ship, and were in quarantine in hotels and other locations on Guam. At least 14 sailors became re-infected after having had the coronavirus, recovering from it, and then testing negative once or twice. The ship is now back out at sea.

Over the past year plus, as has likewise occurred in the mainland USA as well — our governor has continued to extend the public health emergency — meaning home quarantine, social distancing, mandatory mask-wearing, practicing good hygiene, etc. — sometimes tightening restrictions, and sometimes loosening them, as the situation warrants. It has been like this for a number of months now. The lockdown period just keeps getting extended again and again. However, the situation is beginning to look better, as fewer new cases are being reported, and overall deaths remain low for a population of our size.

As many other communities in the mainland USA have likewise experienced, the pandemic is having a very negative effect on our island’s economy; particularly because we depend heavily on tourism, which has been at a standstill for many months now. A number of our local businesses have already been forced to close their doors permanently, because the current economic environment makes remaining open unsustainable. For the immediate future, the economic situation here looks rather bleak, and more of the smaller mom and pop businesses will probably follow suit.

For those of you who may have possibly missed some of my previous coronavirus-related writings, following is a list of everything I have written to date regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. I believe that you will find a lot of useful, factual, instructive and Scriptural information in this material. Please feel free to share this list on your own timelines, pages, in your Facebook groups, and on any other social networks where you happen to participate. Thank you so very much, and God bless you!
