Synopsis:



As is common knowledge amongst those individuals who invest the time in looking into such matters, within the fantasy world of the ridiculous Flat Earth Theory, there exists the widespread belief that not only is the Earth a flat plane -- as opposed to the widely-accepted and scientifically-proven view that it is actually a sphere with slightly flattened poles, and a very slightly bulging Equator -- but this Flat Earth is supposedly encircled by an icy wall which extends around its entire circumference, or perimeter. Depending on who ones chooses to believe, this fictitious wall of ice is supposedly from 150 to as much as 300 feet in height. For example, in their own wiki, the Flat Earth Society claims that this imaginary ice wall is 150 feet in height.

Furthermore, whereas most people with any degree of common sense readily accept that Antarctica is an actual continent which is located in the southernmost region of our planet, Flat Earth adherents hold to a very different view. They in fact are convinced that Antarctica IS their imaginary ice wall, and that it stretches like a huge, icy ring around the entire circumference of their imaginary Flat Earth disk, as I previously noted.

However, allow me to mention here that as likewise occurs in other areas of the world of online opinion, through personal online observation, I have gained a clearer picture of Flat Earth proponents' beliefs, and I have discovered that not all Flat Earth supporters are really in full agreement regarding their beliefs. In other words, there is no general consensus, and quite a bit of diversity in their beliefs, which varies from one person to another. The precise nature of the alleged ice wall is a clear case in point.

From reading quite a few online posts and comments that were written by actual Flat Earth believers, I've come to realize that there are at least two variations regarding the nature of the alleged ice wall. As I already pointed out to you, on one hand is the belief which claims that Antarctica is an ice wall which surrounds the entire perimeter or circumference of the Flat Earth disk. They claim that it is 150 to 300 feet in height, depending on who one chooses to believe. Furthermore, those people who support this particular version of the ice wall theory claim that just outside of this ice wall is Outer Space itself. What?!

In fact, as some of my readers will probably already know, there are a number of online graphics which I collected over time, which illustrate this very concept. I have also shared these same graphics in a series of Flat Earth related posts on various social networks where I participate. At this point in our discussion, let me mention here that I have seen some Flat Earth adherents accuse supporters of the spherical Earth model of having intentionally created these images for the sole purpose of mocking Flat Earth supporters.

Well, personally, I honestly don't know who is responsible for the creation of all of the original graphics which depict the ice wall with Outer Space outside of it. But regardless of who the original creators were, in my view, it is still a moot point. Why do I say this? Well, because regardless of who actually created the images, I have seen my own online, Christian, Flat-Earth-believing friends post the very same graphics on their timelines to more clearly illustrate what they believe. In other words, by even actively posting the graphics, they are consenting to what the images show. They are in fact affirming a Flat Earth disk, with an ice wall around its perimeter, and Outer Space immediately outside of that in all directions.

As I explained a moment ago, I have seen two variations with regard to how the alleged ice wall is described and where it is supposedly located. The second variation claims that the wall -- a.k.a. Antarctica, according to Flat Earth believers -- does NOT surround the entire perimeter of the Flat Earth disk. Rather, according to this second belief, the wall only encompasses six continents of our known world, with the ice wall itself -- meaning Antarctica -- being the 7th continent.

Sadly, this Flat Earth Theory madness does NOT end there. In the first version concerning the ice wall, as we've already discussed, Outer Space itself is located just outside of the ice wall in all directions. However, the second variation of the theory offers a very different interpretation. It claims that instead of Outer Space being directly outside of the ice wall, there exist OTHER LANDS. Certain Flat Earth supporters have even shared online what are claimed to be ancient maps which actually show these lands, with their names included.

But that is not all, folks. While the traditional version of the Flat Earth Theory promotes a well-known, flat, round disk with the ice wall located around the entire circumference of the disk, with a hard dome made out of glass, frozen oxygen or some other substance covering the entire structure, this second variation of the theory claims that these other lands stretch on for infinity without end. In short, according to this version of the theory, the Earth is a flat plain which just goes on and on, similar to the Energizer Bunny. Excuse my sarcasm.

At this point in our discussion, let me mention and emphasize that everything I have shared with you thus far is NOT my own ideas. I did NOT invent any of them. To be quite clear, all of the previous information is derived directly from various comments and posts I have actually read online. Initially, I picked up bits and pieces of information from those of my own Facebook friends who themselves embrace and promote the Flat Earth Theory. It was based upon the information that I gained from them that I authored my first article regarding the Flat Earth Theory in April of 2023 entitled "Other Planets and the Flat Earth Theory". I have written a few additional articles regarding the subject since that time, such as this current one.

More recently, I joined a Facebook debate group called "Flat Earth vs Spherical Earth Official", where I have gained an even deeper, more complete understanding of exactly what the Flat Earth adherents actually believe. As I mentioned earlier in this article, it is my personal observation that not all Flat Earth supporters believe the same things. There is quite a bit of contention, division and disagreement amongst them. This particular point became readily apparent to me the more time I invested in the aforementioned Facebook group.

Sadly, very similar to the rest of Facebook, from my personal experiences in this group, I have discovered that it too has become quite the echo chamber. There are basically two groups who engage in the group: the very dedicated FE adherents who adamantly, vehemently, and sometimes very viciously support the Flat Earth Theory, and those people who strongly object to and oppose the theory. On both sides, there's a percentage of members who are either Christians who base their beliefs at least in part on the Bible, or who are hardcore scientists who are complete atheists. I have encountered both.

The tragedy of this FB group is that it quickly became evident to me that both parties are very much entrenched in their own positions, and have no intention of budging from it, although they do pretend that they will, if one simply provides enough convincing evidence for them to justify switching from their current position. Quite frankly, in my view, it's all just one big mind game, because what I have seen play out over and over again is that BOTH sides strongly reject any evidence -- real or imagined -- which is presented by the other side.

In short, what really occurs in this FB group is that members are NOT really talking TO each other, or making a real effort to try to learn anything from each other. They're just talking AT each other, and trying to force their opinions on the other party, using force, intimidation, mockery, satire, and in some cases, foul language. As for me personally, I'm thinking about leaving the group soon, because I have already invested more time in it than I originally anticipated. I doubt that I will be missed by anyone. In fact, I sense that I may have already worn out my welcome with some of the group admins. One of them in fact already made a post a few days ago in which he stated that discussing religion is off-topic in the group. Yet oddly enough, his post disappeared from the group a few hours later.

But aside from that, even though one is an active contributor to this group -- I currently have the "All-star contributor" badge in this FB group -- nevertheless, all original posts must still be approved by one of the group's admins. Whether or not that changes as one continues to move higher in status in the group, I really do not know. While I have had several dozen of my original posts -- not comments, but actual posts -- approved by the admins, my latest few posts have yet to be approved, and it's been several days now since I posted them. Thus, I am sensing that it may possibly be a clear sign that they're done tolerating my strong Christian views. Who knows. Again, I may just leave before they decide to lower the admin axe on me.

While some of you may be shocked or dumbfounded by some of the Flat Earth Theory beliefs I have shared with you thus far, let me inform you that as I mention in other related BBB articles, Flat Earth adherents believe in even crazier things. Worse yet, some of them attempt to base their misguided beliefs on the Bible. For example, certain Flat Earth Theory supporters outright reject the existence of other planets outside of the Earth itself. In fact, just recently, I had one Flat Earth believer inform me multiple times that the Earth is NOT even a planet. In their words, it is a "physical realm". Even though I asked this person a few times to please clearly define for me what they meant by this phrase, they never did. They just went silent.

This kind of behavior by Flat Earth adherents is something I have repeatedly seen in the aforementioned Facebook group. If you ask them challenging questions which they are unable to answer -- obviously, because there is no answer which comes close to supporting their views -- they will respond in a set variety of ways. They will either go silent on you, or simply avoid your questions altogether and go off on some totally unrelated tangent, or else simply bombard you with a flood of false accusations, sharp criticism, mockery or outright lies. It is very predictable behavior.

Their refusal to believe in the existence of other planets is just one of many Flat Earth absurdities. Despite the plethora of both photographic, video and live-streaming evidence which soundly confirms that the Earth is spherical in shape, sadly, Flat Earth Theory folks reject ALL of it. They are convinced that all of it is either CGI -- Computer-Generated Imagery -- or else the images have been heavily manipulated and edited in a graphics program -- such as Adobe Photoshop -- by NASA, or by another space agency. You encounter this crazy lie coming from Flat Earth folks ad nauseam. Seriously, they are like a flock of well-trained parrots.

Being sane people, while you and I may believe that the Sun is located one Astronomical Unit from the Earth -- or about 93,000,000 miles -- and the mean distance from the Earth to our own Moon is about 238,855 miles, not so in the imaginary and absurd world of the Flat Earth believers. In fact, with this piece of information, I am going to give you a double whammy. In case you have not heard it before, supporters of the Flat Earth Theory are very much convinced that both the Sun and Moon are A LOT closer to the Earth than most people believe. In fact, according to the belief system of Flat Earth proponents, both the Sun and the Moon are situated inside of the dome which supposedly covers the Flat Earth disk.

More specifically, as I point out in my companion article called "Flat Earth Theory: Another Refutation", I have read online figures given by these very mixed-up Flat Earth people which propose that the height of this imaginary dome is from 3,000 to 4,000 miles above the Earth's surface at its apex. Thus, the Sun and the Moon are believed to travel some 3,000 miles above us, but underneath the alleged dome. Now, if you are wondering how in the world the Moon -- which has a diameter of about 2,160 miles -- and the Sun -- which has a diameter of about 865,000 miles -- can possibly fit above the Earth and inside the dome without killing us all, never fear, my friends! The wonderfully creative Flat Earth folks have a very easy solution for that as well.

You see, my friends, again, contrary to what most sane people believe, aside from the fact that the Sun and the Moon really reside inside of the dome according to the Flat Earth Theory, they are also A LOT smaller than you and I have been taught. "How small exactly?" you may ask. Brace yourself! Proponents of the Flat Earth Theory insist that the Sun and the Moon are actually the same size, that being about thirty-two miles in diameter. What?! Yes, you heard me right! That is what some of them say. If you doubt my word, you can very easily verify this piece of information for yourself by using an Internet search engine of your own choosing.

Now, while they may not realize it -- or maybe they really do and just will not admit it -- by placing the Moon inside of their imaginary dome -- and thus only about 3,000 miles above the surface of the Earth -- Flat Earth supporters have actually shot themselves right in their own foot. What do I mean by this? Well, consider the following. Even before this absurd Flat Earth Theory became so popular in recent years with a certain sector of modern society, some people were absolutely convinced that NASA never actually sent anyone to the Moon. Supposedly -- at least so the conspiracy theorists claim -- the Moon landings were all faked in some top secret soundstage who knows where. Such people will even point to certain statements which have allegedly been made by some of the astronauts as a way to supposedly validate their belief.

But think about this. With the Flat Earth Theory, the Moon is no longer 238,855 mean miles away from us. It is supposedly only about 3,000 miles, right? So what does that mean folks? Logically-speaking, it means that if this were true, it would be so much easier -- and obviously faster -- to travel to the Moon. In other words, if we were to embrace the Flat Earth Theory, it makes Moon travel even more plausible, feasible, and considerably cheaper to accomplish. Well how about that! Instead of proving that traveling to the Moon is impossible, Flat Earth Theory supporters have proven the exact opposite!

So what about the stars? Well, being as some Flat Earth folks do NOT believe in Outer Space whatsoever, again, they've come up with what they apparently believe is the perfect solution. The stars, according to some of them -- or maybe all of them; I really don't know being as they can't seem to agree amongst themselves -- are really embedded in the dome. In fact, as I have mentioned before, I had one believer in the Flat Earth Theory tell me that what we see each night in the sky is NOT real. They were convinced that it is merely a painting! Have you had enough of Flat Earth absurdities yet?

Now that I have shared some of the wildest Flat Earth Theory nonsense with you, let us now return to our main subject of discussion. I am referring to the imaginary ice wall which Flat Earth supporters continually insist exists all around our known world. I have already clearly explained to you what the Flat Earth folks supposedly believe, based not on what I personally think, but rather based on what they themselves have posted online. And by the way, if any of you Flat Earth adherents disagree with or object to anything I have said in this article, please don't come whining and complaining to me about it. Instead, take it to your Flat Earth companions who are posting this nonsense online. I can only share what they actually say and post.

At any rate, as I was saying, now that I have shared quite a bit of the Flat Earth nonsense with you, let's get down to the real scientific facts, shall we? Regarding an ice wall existing in Antarctica -- which Flat Earth folks erroneously assume extends all around the perimeter of the Flat Earth -- I had one online scientist state that there is an ice wall in Antarctica which extends for approximately 6,000 miles. Upon conducting my own online research in order to confirm what this person had told me, I found no evidence to support any such Antarctic ice wall of the dimensions which he mentioned.

For the record, I did ask this person about this, but he has yet to respond to my query. Upon further reflection, I wonder if what he really meant to be understood is that there exists a total of about 6,000 miles of NON-CONTIGUOUS ice cliffs if we take into consideration ALL of the ice cliffs which form the perimeter of the continent of Antarctica. This is a very plausible explanation, and I will now explain to you why this is so.

According to my online research, the total combined length of Antarctica's full coastline is currently estimated to be about 11,165 miles. This vast distance includes every type of coastline which is found on the continent, including ice shelves, rocky areas, and glaciers. Floating ice shelves constitute about 44% of the Antarctic coastline. Grounded ice walls resting on rock constitute yet another 38% of the coastline. Together, these two features create extensive ice cliffs. Looking at these two figures, we can easily see how the aforementioned Facebook scientist could have arrived at the conclusion that about 6,000 miles of Antarctic coastline consists of NON-CONTIGUOUS ice cliffs.

But the real question we need to ask ourselves is this: Are any of these ice cliffs of sufficient enough size to pass for some kind of great ice wall encircling the entire Earth, as is imagined by the Flat Earth Theory supporters? Well, my research indicates that the answer is a resounding "No!". In fact, what I discovered is that the largest ice front or ice cliff which exists in Antarctica is the Ross Ice Shelf. This shelf is located at the Bay of Whales. Most of it is claimed by New Zealand. This ice shelf is about 500 miles across at its widest point, and 370+ miles long where its coast meets the ocean. That is to say, where it meets the Ross Sea. The Ross Sea is a deep bay which forms a part of the much larger Southern Ocean which encircles Antarctica.

Furthermore, you should know that the Ross Ice Shelf floats on, and in fact covers, a large portion of the southernmost part of the Ross Sea. Regarding size, the Ross Ice Shelf ice cliffs measure from 50 to 160 feet in height above the water surface. It is when large chunks of ice break off of this shelf and fall into the surrounding ocean that new icebergs are given birth.

My friends, please carefully think about the aforementioned figures. As we have clearly seen, the longest coastal ice cliff in Antarctica only measures some 370 miles in length, and its height is no more than 160 feet. Keeping that point in mind, consider that the total circumference of the Earth is just under 25,000 miles at the Equator. So what is my point? It is this: Even if we were to accept the Flat Earth Theory as scientific fact -- which I obviously do not -- it is very plain to see that an ice shelf that is merely 370+ miles in length can't accommodate a circumference of 25,000 miles. In other words, the Ross Ice Shelf cannot possibly pass for the imaginary ice wall that is strongly promoted by Flat Earth Theory enthusiasts. There is simply no way to make it work.

Well, actually, there is, and do you know how? By lying and being intentionally deceptive in order to promote one's very erroneous point of view. From the posts and comments I have seen on Facebook in the aforementioned group, that's exactly what some Flat Earth Theory advocates actually do. They will lie, purposely deceive, distort the facts, and simply wave their hand and ignore any scientific facts which contradict and challenge their misguided position and understanding. So tell me something. What would you do if you were someone who very strongly embraces the Flat Earth Theory, and who wants to convince other people to believe in the Flat Earth Theory just as you do?

How about this? You could take some of the readily available Antarctic ice shelf photographs and try to convince gullible, naive people that what they are really looking at is the ice wall which supposedly surrounds the Flat Earth disk. It does not matter that those photos only show a few miles of one of the ice shelves in Antarctica. If you are a good talker, you will probably sway the most malleable people to believe just as you do. After all, sad to say, such people are to be found everywhere online, and are just waiting to be deceived. Thus, all you need to do is change their perspective regarding the photos so that they will join your cult of deception.

One of the final questions we are going to address in this article is why this imaginary ice wall is so important to so many of the Flat Earth Theory supporters, particularly those who adopt the view that their ice wall encircles the entire Flat Earth disk. It all comes down to the purported purpose of the ice wall. And what is that? Earlier in this article, I mentioned to you that there are two variations of belief with regard to the ice wall. As we previously discussed, the people who embrace the first position are convinced that Outer Space occurs right outside of the supposed icy cliffs of their imaginary ice wall.

In other words, because their imaginary wall is a huge frozen block of ice, and because they are convinced that the surface of the Earth is absolutely flat -- as opposed to being curved -- their wall prevents the oceans from spilling out into the depths of Outer Space. In short, if their fictitious ice wall did not exist, the world's oceans would drain away in short order with nothing impeding their destruction. Now do you see it? Now do you better understand why Flat Earth Theory folks must insist on the existence of their ice wall, and why they will fight for it and defend it tooth and nail online?

Tragically, those people apparently don't recognize the very serious flaw in their own theory. Allow me to explain it to you. Earlier, while describing for you the Ross Ice Shelf, I mentioned that floating ice shelves constitute about 44% of the Antarctic coastline. I likewise explained to you that the Ross Ice Shelf floats on, and in fact covers, a large portion of the southernmost part of the Ross Sea. Lastly, I informed you that it is when large chunks of ice eventually break off of these ice shelves and fall into the surrounding ocean that new icebergs are given birth.

Do you get that? Where those ice cliffs meet the sea, the ice is not as stable as one might think. Due to their own massive weight, the action of ocean waves constantly beating against them, and probably other factors, portions of those cliffs do in fact break off and fall into the ocean. If you conduct an online search, you will very quickly discover some impressive videos which show this very thing in action. Imagine seeing it happen in person! Wow!

Lastly, those ice shelves float. Well, if ice floats ON TOP OF THE WATER, how in the world does it prevent the water from escaping that is underneath it? Now do you get it? If we were just talking about the Ross Ice Shelf alone, given its small size relatively speaking, maybe no water leakage would occur. However, when we suddenly consider a massive global ice wall that encompasses the entire circumference of the alleged Flat Earth disk, we are talking about potential for a very huge problem. Doesn't it seem plausible that leaks would in fact occur somewhere along that 25,000 mile length? What do you think? Please note that we're discussing the first variation of the ice wall theory, as I described to you earlier.

Of course, I am just speaking theoretically here, because as I've already made quite clear, I don't believe in or embrace the Flat Earth Theory. As such, I am convinced that there is simply NO need for an ice wall encircling the entire planet to hold in the oceans so that they don’t spill out into Outer Space, as Flat Earth Theory adherents foolishly claim. So if the seas and oceans of the world are not held in place by a magical and imaginary ice wall, exactly what does keep them where they belong? This is the next question I will address in this article.

As my longtime, regular readers will already know, whenever I am faced with such questions, my first instinct is to turn to the Holy Scriptures in order to determine what they have to say regarding the matter. Upon doing this, what we learn is that the seas and oceans are confined within the bounds of the natural basins -- or depressions -- which God Himself created at the very beginning of time, or at least near the very beginning. As I mention in the article entitled "Noah's Ark and the Genesis Flood", we are informed that God broke open the depths in order to release the huge amount of water that was contained there. This was in addition to the rain which fell from the sky for forty days and forty nights.

Then, about 110 years after the Genesis Flood had occurred, and during the days of Peleg, we are told that God divided the Earth. So as I more amply explain in the aforementioned article, it's my personal belief that it was a direct result of the destructive forces which were in play at the time of of the Flood, and later during the days of Peleg, that the current seas, oceans, mountain ranges, waterways, lakes, etc., were initially formed and took their shape. Thus, as I said, God specifically designed those basins to hold the world's seas and oceans in their proper place. Consider the following sample Bible verses:

"And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth . . . In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, THE SAME DAY WERE ALL THE FOUNTAINS OF THE GREAT DEEP BROKEN UP, and the windows of heaven were opened."


"And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days. And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged; THE FOUNTAINS ALSO OF THE DEEP and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;"


"And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for IN HIS DAYS WAS THE EARTH DIVIDED; and his brother’s name was Joktan . . . These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood."


Now here is the important point that you need to understand. The basins or depressions of which I speak are surrounded by elevated rock strata and sand -- NOT by an imaginary ice wall encircling the entire Earth as Flat Earth theorists like to continually insist -- which God Himself raised up around the seas and oceans, precisely as the Bible describes. How else could the dry land appear unless God specifically raised it up ABOVE the global ocean? Now, these natural basins of the Earth which hold the water in its place are referred to as the deep and the abyss in the Scriptures. Consider this set of sample Bible verses which prove this point:

"He hath COMPASSED THE WATERS WITH BOUNDS, until the day and night come to an end."


"Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have PLACED THE SAND FOR THE BOUND OF THE SEA by a perpetual decree, THAT IT CANNOT PASS IT: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, YET CAN THEY NOT PREVAIL; though they roar, YET CAN THEY NOT PASS OVER IT?"


"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was UPON THE FACE OF THE DEEP. And the Spirit of God moved UPON THE FACE OF THE WATERS . . . And God said, Let THE WATERS UNDER THE HEAVEN BE GATHERED TOGETHER UNTO ONE PLACE, and let the dry land appear: and it was so And God called the dry land Earth; and THE GATHERING TOGETHER OF THE WATERS CALLED HE SEAS: and God saw that it was good."


"And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. And they besought him THAT HE WOULD NOT COMMAND THEM TO GO OUT INTO THE DEEP."


"Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I HAVE BEEN IN THE DEEP;"


So THAT, my friends, is what holds the seas and oceans of the world in their proper place -- as is very easily observable everywhere -- and NOT some imaginary ice wall encircling the circumference of the Earth. You won't find a single verse of Scripture which comes close to supporting such a ridiculous belief. We are told that God RAISED UP the ground ABOVE the waters in order to give the surface of the Earth its shape. We are also told that He used these rock layers and sand to serve as the bounds -- or boundaries -- for these bodies of water.
