BLAND MAN

by Bill Kochman

You can believe all the lies,
They tell you every year,
You can likewise let them,
Fill your heart with fear.

You can follow the crowds,
Like sardines in a tin can,
Never resisting the current,
Just another ordinary man.

You can always answer yes,
If they even should ever ask,
Merely some faceless person,
Hiding behind your sad mask.

You can follow the program,
Never deviate from the course,
They have got you well trained,
Just like some broken horse.

You can do all these things,
And thus live a life of peace,
They’ll even reward you for it,
But don’t dare make a crease.
