TIN SOLDIERS

by Bill Kochman

See little tin soldiers standing in a row,
Called up for duty, and then off they go.
No, don’t question, do as you are told,
Just accept the lies you have been sold.

You’re required to blend in with the fold,
Don’t even try to break out of the mold.
Trained not to think, follow every order,
When the word is given, fire that mortar.

Harden your heart, and resist the pain,
Otherwise, you will no doubt go insane.
Time to go home now, your job is done,
A lot of blood spilled, but a war was won.

You are a big hero, they all now exclaim,
But yet deep inside, you still feel blame.
You remember many innocent lives lost,
And you question, was it worth the cost?

So many wars have been based on a lie,
Yet we never learn, and people still die.
