SUPER TYPHOON
by Bill Kochman
04-18-2026
From the south that monster arose,
It's typhoon season everyone knows.
Better prepare to ride out the storm,
Quick gather supplies, it's our norm.
Hunker down, that monster arrives,
For it is the wise one who survives.
Hark! She blows! Oh mighty beast,
Danger coming from our southeast.
Just like demons the winds do howl,
So gripped by her eye we are now.
For hours her fierce wrath we felt,
Some people prayed, on knees knelt.
She pounded us hard from the back,
Oh it was such a great sneak attack.
Winds rose to 180, and gusts to 220,
No doubt damage will be very plenty.
Hours passed yet she wouldn't let go,
Mockingly she advanced ever so slow.
Ominous dark clouds reign overhead,
The power is out, everything's dead.
Doors are shaking and windows bend,
Oh dear Lord above, is this my end?
So many of these storms come and go,
It's nature's wrath blow after blow.
Even though strong winds are blowing,
Some crazy roosters keep on crowing.
The sun peeps out and gives us hope,
It inspires strength so we can cope.
Then at last the winds begin to recede,
My big air-con is what I really need.
Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose,
Having no power so gives me the blues.
The floors are flooded, it's time to mop,
When will the torrential rain ever stop?
My candles are lit, they give me light,
A source of comfort throughout the night.
The clouds slowly fade, winds grow still,
The mosquitoes now will have their fill.
Hell on earth those vile pests are to me,
Why won't they just let this old man be?
For many days the power has now been out,
But it's really no use to scream or shout.
The help we all need is nowhere in sight,
It will be another hot, sleepless night.
So everyone the waiting game now plays,
Just wondering for how many more days.
All cell phones die, the Internet is dead,
Will I soon go totally crazy in my head?
In the fridge the milk has now gone bad,
The cheese will follow, it makes me sad.
As for the meat, it already bit the dust,
Canned goods are safe, better to trust.
Then signs appear, life is coming back,
As everyone gets their lives on track.
So many police sirens are now blaring,
The traffic lights need major repairing.
Everywhere loud buzz saws are roaring,
As island folks keep so busy restoring.
Radios are now blaring here and there,
As charcoal fluid permeates island air.
It is now time for barbecues islandwide,
Because we take such storms with stride.
We've be through it so many times before,
Living on Guam will make you hardcore.
Our neighbors are chatting face-to-face,
Oh Lord once again You gave us Your grace.
With patience we have survived once again,
As for the next one, we just know not when.
