Dear friends, I felt compelled to share the following article with you for your consideration, after I encountered certain questionable comments online concerning whether or not there are any types of intelligence life existing outside of our own blue planet, Earth. Well, it seems that in their zealous pursuit to convince their online Christian brethren that such intelligent, extraterrestrial life does NOT exist elsewhere in the Universe, and in their endeavors to substantiate and validate their own position regarding this same issue, some of my Christian brethren point to the following Bible verse which is found in the Book of Isaiah:
"For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else."
Isaiah 45:18, KJV
Sadly, I see a very seriously problem arising when I notice exactly how the aforementioned Christians are interpreting and using this verse to sustain their argument. According to the comments I've read, they understand Isaiah 45:18 to mean that God ONLY created intelligent life on the planet Earth, and apparently nowhere else in the entire Universe. Our blue planet ALONE has intelligent life, they like to continually insist. The only other option I have seen which is embraced by many online Christians, is that if aliens really exist, then clearly, they are ALL demons PRETENDING to be aliens. Period. This is obviously a very widespread belief amongst Christians in online communities, such as the many social networks. I encounter it all the time.
So, folks, those are the only two options said Christians are willing to offer us. To reiterate the point: Either the aliens don't exist at all, and intelligent life is limited to our planet Earth only, or else aliens may exist, but if they do exist, then they are clearly demons in disguise. As I have shared with my readers before, I find such a mindset which offers no other possibilities but these two rather limiting. Furthermore, as I explain in articles such as the series "Nature of the Alien: ETs, Demons or a Government Plot?", I think this subject is lot more complex than that. We cannot simplify as these Christians try to do.
Regarding the "All aliens are really demons" argument, all I will say is the following: With an attitude like that, I can understand why said aliens -- should they actually exist -- would be very hesitant to approach the Earth, and would more than likely want to stay away from the Earth, for as long as possible. Why engage such human hostility and an atmosphere of total distrust? What positive fruit could possibly result from such hostile encounters? Nothing as far as I can see.
One very interesting thing I have noticed concerning those Christians who embrace this "either or" mindset, is that a lot of them embrace Futurist theology. If you are not too familiar with the doctrine of Futurism, please refer to my article entitled "Fight Against Futurism!", which you will find listed at the end of this same article. Basically, the Futurists believe in the near-future return of Jesus Christ and the Rapture of the Saints. So exactly how does the alien and UFO phenomena play into Futurist theology?
Well, according to many of the online comments I have read over the years, the Futurists are convinced that when their anticipated Rapture occurs, the unbelieving world will try to explain it away by insisting that the Christians weren't taken up by Jesus Christ. Rather, they were merely abducted by alien forces. I have seen many online Christians promote this point of view on some of the social networks. So you see, this is one reason why certain Christians absolutely refuse to embrace the possibility that intelligent life may exist beyond our own planet. Alien beings simply do not fit into their narrow-minded theology.
At this point in our discussion, we are going to take a much closer look at Isaiah 45:18. As we have seen, there are some Christians who point to this verse as proof that God created intelligent life on planet Earth alone. However, if we are truly being honest with ourselves, is that what the verse is actually saying? In my opinion, most definitely not! All the verse is really telling us is that God created the Earth to be inhabited. That was His specific purpose for creating it. He did not create the Earth in vain, as the verse states.
However, that doesn't seem to be God's only reason for doing so. In my view, the rest of the verse also seems to suggest that God created the Earth as a demonstration of His great power and magnificence. In fact, if we advance forward one chapter in the Book of Isaiah, we discover two other related verses which for many years now have been two of my favorite Bible verses concerning the subject of God's greatness and power. Consider the following:
"Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:"
Isaiah 46:9-10, KJV
Returning to Isaiah 45:18, to be clear, the statement that God created the Earth to be inhabited most certainly does NOT preclude God from doing the very same thing elsewhere in the Universe, in my view. It is really a simple question for me personally: If God created intelligent life here on planet Earth, what was to prevent Him from creating intelligent life on some other far-flung planets which currently remain beyond our technological capabilities to reach? What hard and fast rule is there that forces God to submit Himself to this kind of limitation? You see, by even trying to impose this kind of rule on God, we are really stepping into dangerous territory.
The truth is that only the aforementioned Christians seem to possess the audacity to impose such a mandate on the Creator of the Universe. Thus, to suggest that Isaiah 45:18 confirms that God only created intelligent life here on planet Earth -- even though it really doesn't say it -- is intentionally twisting and perverting the meaning of the verse, as far as I am concerned. This is, of course, nothing new. I have seen so many online Christians purposely distort the meaning of certain Scriptures as they endeavor to promote their pet doctrines, that it is beyond ridiculous.
Some of the interpretations and explanations they offer is enough to make one's jaw drop. However, I rarely respond to such posts, simply because I really do not want to get into it with them, and I already know in advance that it will be an exercise in futility anyway, as I discuss in the article called "Should Christians Engage in Doctrinal Debates?" The fact of the matter is that when people are that convinced regarding a certain doctrine or belief, and that deceived, it can be extremely difficult to convince them to even see their error in understanding, and even more challenging to convince them to back down from it. Even amongst Christians, pride has taken very deep roots.
Yet sadly, as I have already made clear to you, with regard to Isaiah 45:18, that is precisely what some Christians do. They try to force the verse to say what it really does not say at all. Now, if you happen to be one of such people who understands the verse in that manner, as a word of friendly advice and brotherly counsel, I urge you to please be very careful regarding re-interpreting Bible verses according to your own understanding. Instead of twisting a verse so that it conforms to what you personally believe -- and which no doubt makes you comfortable -- accept the Scriptures for exactly what they say without any personal tweaks to them.
More to the point, allow me to draw your attention to the glaring fact that Isaiah 45:18 does NOT contain either the word "only", or even the word "alone". Both of these words are totally absent from the verse. So where did this idea that God only created life on planet Earth come from then? Isn't the answer rather obvious? The simple truth of the matter is that those Christians who reject the possibility of intelligent alien life existing somewhere else in the Universe have inserted "only" or "alone" into the verse so that it conforms to what they have chosen to believe. That is the gist of it, plain and simple. It is their invention, and it doesn't have a Scriptural leg to stand on, as far as I know.
To be clear, I am NOT saying that they actually, physically insert the word "only" or "alone" into the Bible. But what I am saying, is that when they engage in online discussions regarding this topic, they insert one of the words, or both of those words into their comments, as if Isaiah 45:18 does contain them, which as we have seen, it most certainly does not. In short, said Christians are applying their personal interpretation to that verse. However, please consider the following admonition which is found in the Apostle Peter's second Epistle:
"Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."
2 Peter 1:20-21, KJV
Thus, we see that the Prophet Isaiah was inspired by the Holy Ghost when he wrote Isaiah 45:18, exactly as we see it today. As such, modern Christians have absolutely no right to tamper with what Isaiah wrote in the verse, or to apply any kind of interpretation to the verse which violates what it actually says and means. I hope you agree.
Expanding our discussion beyond Isaiah 45:18, as some of my longtime readers will already know, over the decades I have authored a substantial number of articles concerning Outer Space related subjects such as extrasolar planets, some of the more famous comets, the prophetic star Wormwood which is mentioned in the Book of Revelation, a few Earth-threatening asteroids such as Apophis, the discovery and demotion of the planet Pluto, the potential for intelligent extraterrestrial life, etc. I find these subjects both interesting and quite fascinating.
If you have read any of those articles -- you will find them listed at the end of this same article -- then you may know that, personally, I do not know with any degree of certainty whether or not NHI -- Non-Human Intelligence — exists on any other planets in the Universe. For me personally, it remains an open-ended question. While the Bible does not offer us a clear answer regarding this question, personally, in my view, and as I mentioned earlier, I think it is unwise for any of us to try to limit God, or to somehow place Him in a box of our own making, constrained by our own narrow-minded views regarding what He can and cannot do. In fact, it is absolute foolishness on our part to even try to do so.
My dear friends, let's face it. The Universe is a very vast construct. It contains innumerable galaxies, stars, planets, solar systems, nebulae, asteroids, planetoids, comets, black holes, quasars, pulsars, dark energy and other celestial objects which may be beyond our current human comprehension. Regarding its actual size, while astronomers sometimes offer mathematical figures to help us to try to fathom the precise immensity of it all, if the truth be told, such figures are educated guesses at best, based on the observable Universe. Honestly speaking, no one really knows how big the Universe is, because even our current technology has its limitations.
With our current technology, we still can't even observe its outermost reaches, which according to latest statistics, is around 46.5 billion light-years away from the Earth. Because astronomers currently believe that our Universe is a sphere, that means that the total estimated diameter of the entire observable Universe is approximately ninety-three billion light-years. Now, to help us put this into perspective, one light-year equates to about 5.88 trillion miles. My friends, I don't know about you, but my mind cannot even grasp that distance. My life over the past forty years has consisted of traveling no more than five or ten miles distance at a time. My physical world is indeed small.
But guess what, folks? 5.88 trillion miles is just the start of this mind-boggling journey, because that is the distance that light travels in only ONE light-year. So then, exactly how large is the total distance from the Earth to the edge of the observable Universe? To find that answer, we have to multiply 46.5 billion light-years times 5.88 trillion miles per light-year. The answer is written in scientific notation in the following manner:
2.7342e+23 miles
But exactly what does that figure mean for a regular person who may not understand more advanced mathematics? The number 2.7342e+23 means 2.7342 times 10 to the twenty-third power. If you were to write it out in full, it would look like the following. Yeah, I know. Unbelievable!:
273,420,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles
The previous figure equates to the unfathomable distance of 273 sextillion, 420 quintillion miles. Please remember that this figure only represents the RADIUS -- that is to say, it is only HALF the length -- of the complete universal sphere. In other words, my friends, if we actually consider the full ninety-three billion light-years in diameter of the Universe, the actual figure is closer to this:
550,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles
That is written as 550 sextillion miles. As a disclaimer, let me mention here that these figures are based on online data which is easily available to anyone with a computer or a cell phone or other similar device. As to the precise accuracy of these stated figures, most honest scientists will inform you that this is only an estimated guess that is based on current data. In fact, please bear in mind that this is only the size of the OBSERVABLE Universe. Some astronomers believe that the Universe could be as much as 250 times larger than what I've actually shared with you here. Ultimately, astronomers have no reliable estimate of the real size of the entire Universe. That is to say, the combined size of both the observable and the unobservable areas of the Universe. This is because the light from those distant regions of Outer Space have not even reached Earth yet. Thus, that part of Outer Space is not even observable yet. At least that is how astronomers explain it.
No matter how we choose to look at it, that distance is huge. Can any of us even comprehend that distance in our limited, finite minds? I believe that it really requires the mind of God. Don't you agree? In thinking about this vast distance, and all of the other unknown things which may have possibly been done by the Lord throughout the Universe, I am reminded of the following Bible verses:
"LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep."
Psalm 92:5, KJV
"Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it."
Psalm 139:6, KJV
"Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable."
Psalm 145:3, KJV
"As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all."
Ecclesiastes 11:5, KJV
"Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding."
Isaiah 40:28, KJV
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
Isaiah 55:8-9, KJV
"Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:"
Job 5:9, KJV
"Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number."
Job 9:10, KJV
"O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!"
Romans 11:33, KJV
"Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law."
Psalm 119:18, KJV
"But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God."
1 Corinthians 2:9-12, KJV
So taking the aforementioned figures into consideration, and contemplating how many Earth-like planets could potentially exist in such an imaginably huge construct -- not that any extraterrestrial species would necessarily require the very same kind of Earth environment as we do in order to survive -- it is difficult for me to accept that the great Creator of the Universe would create something so great and so amazingly vast -- which itself is simply beyond our human comprehension -- only to populate one tiny planet -- our "Pale Blue Dot" as American astronomer Carl Sagan popularized with his 1994 book Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space -- that is found amongst His entire creation. As I have shared on a few previous occasions, to me personally, this seems like a major waste of celestial real estate. Perhaps you will agree with me. Perhaps not.
Before concluding this article, allow me to leave my readers with one final challenging question, which I also address in the eight-part series called "Alien Life, Extrasolar Planets and Universal Atonement". After God rested on the seventh day as we read in the first chapter of the Book of Genesis, what exactly do you think He did after that? Do you think that God has just sat idle for millennia ever since then, and that He has done absolutely nothing? Or is it possible that our great Creator -- in the company of His own Son, Jesus Christ -- has continued creating new life elsewhere in the Universe?
My friends, stop and think about the following for a moment. If we consider that man is made in God's very own image, and that human beings are constantly inventing and creating new things, and reaching out to explore new frontiers, doesn't it suggest a surprising answer? In other words, is it possible that our Heavenly Father and His Son may have the very same nature, and that they too are likewise constantly creating new things, including new civilizations on other planets in the vastness of Outer Space? Have I spurred your thinking?
In conclusion, the bottom line is this. Just as I am willing to humbly admit that I am unable to conclusively prove from the Scriptures that God has done any of these things, I hope that those of you who embrace the view that extraterrestrial civilizations do not exist, have the same humility to admit that neither do you have sold Biblical proof to substantiate your belief either. Fair enough?
With these thoughts, I will bring this article to a close. It is my hope that you've found it informative and enlightening, and I pray that it has been a blessing in your life as well.
