In all of the following verses, the word “earnest” is derived from the Koine Greek word “arrabon”. Thayer’s Greek English Lexicon defines this ancient word as meaning “money which in purchases is given as a pledge or downpayment that the full amount will subsequently be paid.” In other words, the spark of the Holy Spirit which we each receive in this current life is sort of like a downpayment, preview or sample of the full life in the Spirit which we shall someday experience in the wonderful City of God, New Jerusalem. It is just a foretaste of what is to come.

For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the EARNEST OF THE SPIRIT. Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”
